Whatever your definition, having clarity on what you want from your business will help it serve you, not the other way around. After all, the average person spends 40,000 hours at work over their lifetime, and life is too short to be continually doing things we don’t enjoy.
Here is a simple exercise to define what success looks like for you. Grab a drink, a notepad, find a quiet space, and let’s envision where you want to be in the next 12 months.
1. Who Do You Need to Be Right Now?
Stop thinking, "When I have this, I will do that, and then I will be this." Instead, focus on who you need to be right now. Start acting, and even dressing, in a way that's consistent with that person. Imagine the mindset, habits, and actions of your future successful self, and begin incorporating them into your life today. This shift in perspective can be transformative, setting the stage for your journey towards your goals.
2. What Do You Love Doing Outside of Work and at Work?
Identify the activities you love most, both in your personal life and at work. Everyone has tasks they don’t enjoy and often put off. Determine which of these tasks can be delegated or outsourced (see our article on Outsourcing), freeing up more time for what you’re good at and passionate about. This not only boosts your productivity but also enhances your overall satisfaction.
3. How Many Hours Will You Commit to the Things You Love Doing?
Decide how many hours each week you’ll dedicate to activities you enjoy. Write it down, commit to it, and tell someone who can hold you accountable. Block out this time in your calendar. Setting aside time for what you love is a powerful step in taking back control of your life and ensuring that your business serves you.
4. What Holidays Do You Want to Have?
Think about where you want to go and when. Be specific! Visualise the destinations and experiences you want. Block out the time in your calendar now. Planning your holidays in advance ensures you make time for relaxation and rejuvenation, which are crucial for maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
If holidays are a bit of a stretch right now create ‘margins’ - spaces outside of your normal routine. Ideas come in the margins so schedule some down time - your next great idea could be waiting for you to just take a day off.
5. How Much Income Do You Need to Deliver on This New Life?
Write down the income you need to support your envisioned lifestyle. Don’t worry about the how just yet; focus on the what. Having a clear financial goal provides a target to work towards and can guide your business decisions.
Now you have an outline of a personal plan for what you want to get out of your business. Make this plan visible - pin it to your workspace, set reminders, and start taking actionable steps towards it. Remember, success is not just about reaching financial milestones but about creating a life that fulfils and excites you.
